How much in advance should I book accommodation and how soon do you respond?
For the widest choice, or to reserve a particular home, give us as much notice as possible. On last minute bookings there will be less choice, especially when there are more than two in your party. We usually respond on the same day or within 24 hours. At weekends, when the office is closed, it may take up to 36 hours.

What’s it like staying in someone’s home?
It’s like staying with friends or family, but you pay!

Do I have to be home by a certain time?
No, you will have your own front door key and may come and go as you please. If you get home really late, please be as quiet as possible.

Will my accommodation have a shower?
Yes usually. Some of our homes have separate shower cubicles, other have a shower over the bath.

What’s the difference between an en suite bathroom and a private bathroom?
You have access from your bedroom to an en suite bathroom. A private bathroom is for your exclusive use and will be adjacent to your room or across the landing.

What’s the difference between a double room and a twin room?
A double room has one large bed and a twin room has 2 single beds.

Do you have family rooms?
We offer family rooms to sleep 3, 4 or 5 guests and homes with two adjacent rooms.

What time is breakfast?
Usually between 8-9.30am but please negotiate a convenient time with your hosts.

Do you have weekly rate?
Yes, some of our hosts offer long stay accommodation. Minimum stay is 2 weeks. Bed linen & towels are provided.

Air-conditioning & central heating?
Like the majority of homes in Britain, none of the homes has air-conditioning though they all have central heating.

Can I drink tap water?
It is safe to drink tap water everywhere in the UK.

Making telephone calls?
Unlike North America and some European countries, we pay for all local calls in the UK. You may like to buy a First National Phone Card, or similar, [in £5 or £10 units] for use from a private number or from a phone box. These cards are available from newsagents, supermarkets, airports and stations.

How long does it take from the airport to my accommodation?
Allow 40 minutes from Heathrow or City Airport to central London [less than £5.00]. From Gatwick allow 30 minutes by Gatwick Express to Victoria Station [cost £10.00]. During the rush hours [7.30am- 9.30am and 5 – 6.30pm] public transport to and from airports can be quicker than a taxi.

Check in/out times?
If there are no guests in the room on the previous night you may have immediate access, usually from 8am onwards. Otherwise your room will be ready from about 11am. If you wish you may arrive before 11am and relax with tea or coffee until your room is ready. It is important that we have your flight details and/or arrival time so that your hosts may plan to be at home to welcome you.

Please vacate your room by 10am on your last day. However, this is flexible and by arrangement with your hosts. If your flight leaves later in the day your hosts can hold your luggage until you are ready to leave.

When do central London shops open on Sundays?
Some 11am – 5pm. Others noon – 6pm.

If I have queries about sightseeing, will my host be able to help?
Our hosts are Londoners who enjoy their city and will be happy to answer your queries. You can also view our Insider Guide for some ideas to get you started.

Where can we get theatre tickets?
From the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square or from the theatre. Avoid street ticket touts who often sell false tickets at inflated rates.

When does the underground [tube] finish and what does it cost?
Approximately midnight. For Travelcard rates, pick up a free guide from a tube station called ‘Travelling in London’. A Zone 1 & 2 day-pass for tube & bus costs about £4.00.

Where can I store luggage in central London?
Left luggage departments at all main line stations [Victoria, Paddington, Kings Cross, Euston, Waterloo].

When do clocks change to summer and winter in the UK?
Clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday in March and back one hour on the last Sunday in October. These dates are now harmonised with the rest of Europe.
